Conner just informed me that Mr. Mote was happy with our full brass sectional last Wednesday. He did, however, mention that we need to work on NOT BLASTING. I noticed this while we were playing. In fact, I noticed it during separate sectionals. I know Josh has been trying to get low brass to play out on their important parts, but don't blast. Justin, I noticed a little blasty-ness in Greased Lightnin' on your moving part after the drum section. It does need to be heard, but back off a little bit. (If Josh tells you it's perfect, back off a little. We don't need so much tuba, it's the only thing you can hear. And remember, Josh is going to be playing too. With both of you playing that volume... well... we don't need that.) Also, on crescendos, I hear a little too much baritone crescendoing too quickly. Trumpets, there are a few lasers (I have a feeling I might be one of them), so try to blend with the rest of the brass. Mellophones also, one or two lasers. Other than that, rhythms sounded good, (most of) the dynamic contrast was good, and tuning was, for the most part, pretty decent. We just have to work on the blasting, so we'll be working on that this Wednesday, as well as some of Summer Nights.

I thought the first line said Mr. Mote was NOT happy with our sectional lol.
I was skimming it and the "NOT" from the sentence below it mixed me up.

lol That's why you don't skim. Either that, or reread.

I just had an idea. Since probably not all of the veteran trumpets will have their music passed off by this Wednesday, we could cut individual sectionals short a little bit and do full brass a little longer. My idea was that we do a full run-through of Fire of Eternal Glory, then we sing it. If you're wondering about my reasoning for this, check out the video of the Carolina Crown singing in the Marching Band Video Thread. If we can sound like that when we sing, our playing will improve tremendously.

unless you sing like i do then your playing will be out of pitch, key, and tune lol

Ok. I think we should also keep a strict time period of basic marching from 2:45 - 3:00 or 2:45 - 3:15 (or whatever you want it to be). We just can't keep extending basic marching time just because they can't get something. Also, if there are 2-3 minutes remaining before we go inside for sectional work, we should just cut basic marching short instead of trying to move on to something different. We waste enough time trying to get settled in the locker room or wherever, or if we do decide to teach something new for basic marching it just wastes time because people talk or don't get it right the first time. I just think right now the rookies need to focus on music more than anything.

Except for Zac.... we really need to get to work on getting him in the show. I think we should replace basic marching on Wednesday with a little bit of the show and fixing GL Set 4 (the eyeball). And we can do a little bit tomorrow and Thursday after school (if I can stay, which, hopefully, I will be able to). And if we really have to, we can have him stay a little bit on Friday and we can work with him then. I'll have to talk about Mr. Mote about this though. But yeah, you're right. We need to keep a strict time schedule. Marching 2:45-3, lessons (may not happen this week because of veteran pass-offs)3-3:30, sectionals 3:30-4:30, full brass 4:30-5. And if all the veterans don't have their music passed off by Wednesday, we'll just do marching for an extra half hour and not have lessons. I don't want to have some veterans pass off the music on Wednesday and immediately start teaching the rookies... that just won't work. You don't have an American in Spanish 3 teach a Mexican proper Spanish grammar (lol sorry, only analogy I could think of). Actually, I don't think lessons should happen at all this week. Since veterans only have until tomorrow to pass off Greased Lightnin' and Summer Nights before Wednesday, that's almost as bad as having them pass it off on Wednesday. We should start next week.

Wait, so we need Greased Lightning for tomorrow and Summer Nights for Wednesday? Also, I don't think after school on Tuesday/Thursday will be good for Zac because we need all the trumpets there to make it effective, and we're not allowed to force trumpets to come to anything except Wednesday sectionals.

Bleh... I'm just trying to work something out here. My idea was that, since we'll be having those optional lessons/practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays, we could just take the trumpets outside and work on it. And we could tell the trumpets that we need them to stay Tuesday and Thursday, and if they miss it, just treat it like it was optional.

Yeah, I understand that you want to take them outside, but that's only really useful if we have all the trumpets here. You aren't allowed to tell the trumpets it's a required practice when it is just optional. I'm just basing this off past experience and I know Mote doesn't like having the kids come when they don't have to, especially when they have practice from 6-8 that same day. Parents will get suspicouosusos.

I hate this.... how do we get Zac into the show? Are we really just going to have him dress all his sets?
