Next week, Sunday the 14th through Thursday the 18th, is marching band/leadership camp at the University of Georgia. Conner, Robert, Dryn, and I will be attending. Apologies to anyone else who is going that I didn't mention (those four are the only ones I know of). There probably won't be much of a performance at the end of the camp, but show up on the last day anyway. Come out and support us and stuff...
Also, to anyone who didn't go to the UGA Summer Music Camp this last week, which is everyone except me and Nicole, you missed out on an awesome week. We had great music, and good conductor, and DERISHUS food. A lot of people go, and you get to make a lot of friends. Plus, there's free time you can use to do pretty much whatever you want (go to the pool, practice your instrument, read in your dorm room, play card/board games, go to the book store, etc.). You can also sign up for private lessons with the UGA instructor for your instrument. You have masterclasses with that instructor every day, and you can have one to two lessons with him/her (or you can choose not to have lessons). Rehearsals are about an hour each, and we have three rehearsals per day (morning after musicianship classes, after lunch, and after dinner). Also, each night there's a special performance/activity for the entire camp. Usually the activities include a faculty recital, a staff recital, a dance, and a concert for chamber ensembles. This year the camp was a day shorter, though, so we didn't have the dance, but they'll probably have it again in the future.
Here's the basic schedule we've followed for the last three years:
7:00am - 8:00am — Breakfast
8:15am - 9:30am — Musicianship Classes
9:45am - 11:00am — Rehearsal
11:15am - 12:00pm — Sectionals/Chamber Ensembles
12:15pm - 1:15pm — Lunch
1:30pm - 2:30pm — Rehearsal
2:45pm - 3:45pm — Masterclasses
4:00pm - 5:30pm — Free Time
5:45pm - 6:45pm — Dinner
7:00pm - 8:15pm — Rehearsal
8:30pm - 9:30pm — Evening Activity
10:00pm — On your hall
10:30pm — Lights out
The camp is a lot of fun, so I encourage everyone to try it next year. Even if you're going to be a graduating senior this coming year, you can still attend. (I'm going to.) The cost the last few years has been between $400 and $550.
The last two years, the camp has added a special program called the Institute. Basically, the Institute is an honors program. They run on a slightly different schedule from the rest of the camp, but it's pretty much the same thing, just a little more rigorous. (This year they had Music Theory in place of free time. D:) I haven't tried the Institute because I'd rather go to the camp to have fun and be with friends, but if you want to, you should definitely try it. The audition includes sending a recording ahead of time for acceptance into the Institute, then a live audition for chair placement at the beginning of camp.
So, to sum things up,
GO TO THE UGA SUMMER MUSIC CAMP!!!!!!! IT'S AWESOME, AND YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!!!
