I'm descended from the Kikuchi family, one of the large empires in Japan around 1000 AD. My family wasn't just a samurai family that served the empire. My family WAS the empire.
My great-grandfather went to China to look for work. He helped build one of the first railway bridges in China. While he was there, he got involved with the orchestra that the railroad company ran. My grandma doesn't know for sure, but she thinks he played the mandolin. I guess we know where my bandgeekiness came from.
My grandfather was in China during the Chinese Revolution with Mao Zedong, etc. etc. He was actually in one of the places where the war was starting to pick up. He was invited to go visit one of his friends in another part of China, and he would learn to be a doctor while he was there. But he decided not to go. And it was for his — and my — good. The war moved into that area about the same time he decided against going. He could have died if he had went.
Some common Japanese last names that have appeared in my family include Yoshida, Hashimoto, Kawaguchi, Nishimura, Yamada, Mizuno, Kikuchi, Toriumi, Yoshikawa, and, of course, Watanabe.
And last, but not least, one of my great-grandfathers was named Akira. LOLOL

I forgot, I also have some interesting history on my mom's (American) side. I'm related to Robert E. Lee and John Wilkes Boot (Lincoln's assassinator).
