We will be having sectionals every Wednesday from 2:45 to 5:00. We'll start outside with some basic marching right at 2:45, so be out there ready to march as early as possibly so we can get back inside out of the hot sun quickly. We'll start lessons once all the veterans have passed off Greased Lightnin' and Summer Nights, so I need all veterans to be working on that. I'd like to start lessons this week, so try to have those two songs memorized by Wednesday. For everyone else, also try to have the first two show tunes memorized by Wednesday so we can work on passing them off during sectionals. For anyone who doesn't have their music memorized by Wednesday, I'll be doing some pass-offs before and after practice on Thursday and after school on Friday. If you can stay on Friday after you pass off, this would also be a good chance to stay for our optional Friday practices. Justin and I will lead these, and we'll work on breathing and buzzing exercises.
So, veterans, have the music memorized by Wednesday. I'll do pass-offs for anyone who wants to on Tuesday as well.

Geoff had a good idea a few days ago. He suggested that we have lessons or practice sessions every Monday after school. These lessons would be optional, so anyone who wants to come to improve and prove their dedication can come. Marleigh came today, and I was really surprised that she was the only one. Like I said, this is optional, but I would like for everyone to come to at least two lessons. Geoff, Anthony, and I will be leading these lessons/practices. I may not be able to be there every week, but I will try my best. Geoff and Anthony are both really good teachers, and you could learn a few things from them when I'm not there. I encourage all trumpets to come to these lessons. These lessons will be only for trumpets, so you get individual instruction from a fellow trumpet player without the distractions of other instruments. I hope to see more of you next Monday.

If any rookies come I will tell you the secret on how to be better than Michael. I told Marleigh, but she can't let anyone know.

Zac (Munson), we need to come up with a day to stay after school so we can work on the music and the show and everything you missed at band camp. Fridays after school are good for me, and some Tuesdays and Thursdays too. Wednesdays we have sectionals, so we'll be working on the music already. But let me know when a good time is for you.

Yeah, we need to ask Mote if Zac will be able to march on Friday. But I'm saying to keep your peripharals (sp?) on him whenever he is in view. Don't move your head too much, just enough so you can see what he's doing. K. That will have to wait until Thursday, though. (Spelling is peripheral). Okay. So sectionals tomorrow, we'll start with a fifteen minutes of basic marching and a short warm up. We'll go in and do lessons.... the thing about your idea of veterans doing lessons even if they haven't passed off the music yet is that I need to know that they're at least playing it right. So I do need some kind of pass-off from all veterans, with or without music. If all the veterans are good, then we'll do lessons. If not, we'll split the six rookies between you, me, and Geoff. I can probably take Victoria and Zach (they haven't said anything about pass-offs yet, so I don't know if they're ready or not). If Katie can come tomorrow, she can take Zach and Victoria. After lessons, I want to do circle drill. BRING WATER. We'll play Greased Lightnin' and Summer Nights and fix a few things, and, if we have time, we'll run through Born to Hand Jive (all marching). We'll do that for about twenty minutes, and we'll use the last forty minutes for pass-offs. I think we should just do it in front of all the trumpets, like during class. We're going to be playing it in front of everyone anyway on Fridays. And that way I can get some comments from the rest of the trumpets (test the rookies' hearing and knowledge). I may have two or three play at once to pass them off more quickly. It'll probably be a first and a second, or a first and two seconds so the seconds passing off can here the first part.

A full commitment means dropping out of school, which includes dropping out of band, picking up private lessons every other day, practicing before breakfast, right after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, and right before you go to bed for an hour each practice session, and having a lot of dedication and perserverance. I wish I could do that, but I can't. And I'm not encouraging dropping out of school. But it does take a lot of work. I had semi-private lessons (lessons in small groups) with my band director in middle school in Pennsylvania, which really helped a lot. I also had a really good teacher my first year, so it didn't take me very long to learn all the fingerings, get a decent tone, and get a pretty good range (I could play a high C by the end of my first year). We also had to practice at least 150 minutes a week in at least four days (30 minutes for five days). So that really got me working hard to improve. Plus, I'm impatient, so I don't like to stay stuck on the same thing for more than one lesson.
My main point here is that it takes a lot of practice to be able to play any instrument.
